“Foundational Problem Finding”
This talk takes up a requested question about how one goes about finding “foundational problems” on which to work. Examples and approaches in various fields of science and engineering with special reference to issues inĀ ‘s computing will be explored.
Alan Kay is a “systems guy” with short bio: “No one owes more to his research community” (ARPA/Parc) — where, with many others, he was part of the inventions of modern personal computing, object-oriented programming and graphical user interfaces. His contributions have been recognized by receiving the ACM Turing Award and the NAE Draper Prize* et al. His undergrad degrees were in Mathematics and Molecular Biology with concentrations in Anthropology and English, and his MS and PhD were in Computer Science.
