CS 201: Challenges and Opportunities in Private Content Search, DON METZLER, Google

ABSTRACT: Private content search (e.g., email search, desktop search, calendar search, etc.) presents a range of interesting challenges and opportunities. In this talk, I will define the problem of private content search (and how it’s fundamentally different than Web search), explain the challenges of searching private data, and cover a number of research findings and opportunities in the area. BIO: Don Metzler is a Staff Software Engineer at Google. Previously he was a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California (USC) and a Senior Research Scientist at Yahoo! He has served as the Program Chair of the WSDMICTIR, and OAIR conferences and sat on the editorial boards of all the major journals in his field. He has published over 50 research papers, has been awarded 4 patents, and co-authored the textbook Search Engines: Information Retrieval in Practice. He currently leads the Google “Apps Search Quality” team that is responsible for delivering a great search experience to the billion-plus users of Google’s productivity suite, which includes Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Keep, etc.
