ABSTRACT: The world is inherently complex and full of uncertainties. However, with the wide availability of large-scale data and relatively cheap computational power, machine learning has been effectively used to nearly achieve human-level intelligence in many challenging tasks. In particular, the recent success and popularity of deep learning have had a tremendous impact on various applications including image recognition, video and text understanding, machine translation, and speech synthesis. In this talk, I will give an introduction to deep learning from an engineering perspective and will cover topics including dropout, convolutional networks, embeddings, recurrent neural networks, and LSTMs. BIO: Khaled is a robotics researcher at Google [X] working on self-driving cars. He received his PhD in computer science from UCLA where he was a member of the Automated Reasoning Group. He is the recipient of the Northrop Grumman outstanding research award. Before UCLA, he was a researcher at LAAS-CNRS, France working on stochastic analysis of real-time systems. His research interests are in machine learning, robotics, automated reasoning and optimization.
