On January 24, 2025, at the Symposium on Principles of Programming Languages (POPL) in Denver, UCLA Computer Science Professor Jens Palsberg delivered a keynote address titled “Welcome to Quantum 3.0!”

POPL is a leading international forum for researchers, practitioners, and government representatives working on programming languages and programming systems. The symposium serves as a platform to explore cutting-edge developments and shape the future of the field.

In his keynote, Professor Palsberg delved into how recent breakthroughs in quantum error correction are ushering in a new era for quantum computing or, as he calls it, Quantum 3.0. He emphasized the growing role of computer science in the quantum domain and outlined a forward-looking research agenda that places computer science at the center of progress in quantum technologies.
