UCLA CS alumnus Vint Cerf received the 2023 IEEE Medal of Honor (https://corporate-awards.ieee.org/recipients/current-recipients/#medals). This is the highest recognition that the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) awards. It is given for an exceptional contribution or an extraordinary career in the IEEE fields of interest.

Cerf received the award “for co-creating the Internet architecture and providing sustained leadership in its phenomenal growth in becoming society’s critical infrastructure.”

Cerf earned an M.S. degree in 1970 and a Ph.D. degree in 1972 in Computer Science at UCLA. He is widely considered an Internet pioneer and is best known for having co-developed the TCP/IP network protocols on which the Internet is built.  He is currently vice president and chief Internet evangelist for Google.
