CS Assistant Professors Cho-Jui Hsieh and Kai-Wei Chang have been awarded the 2019 Facebook Research Award on Computationally Efficient NLP. The program focused on making NLP models more efficient both at training and testing time to enable production applications of such models at scale and potentially make them directly runnable on mobile devices without losing the quality of models run on servers. Among 115 proposals from 35 countries submitted this year, 11 projects were selected for funding. (https://ai.facebook.com/blog/ai-language-research-consortium-announcement/)
