Professor Yizhou Sun’s paper “PathSim: Meta Path-Based Top-K Similarity Search in Heterogeneous Information Networks” has won this year’s VLDB Test of Time Award. Other authors include Jiawei Han, Xifeng Yan, Philip S. Yu, and Tianyi Wu.

The paper is a significant contribution to both academia and industry. VLDB is one of the most prestigious conferences in the database sector. PathSim has received more than 1600 citations in the past 11 years and has laid the foundation of the field of heterogeneous information networks, which have been widely used in e-commerce, healthcare, cybersecurity, and social network systems.

More about this award: “A paper is selected from the VLDB Conference from 10 to 12 years earlier that best meets the ‘test of time’. In picking a winner, the committee evaluates the impact of the paper. The committee especially values the impact of the paper in practice, e.g., in products and services. Impact on the academic community demonstrated through significant follow-through research by the community is also valued.”
