Congratulations to Assistant Professor Kai-Wei Chang!  We are pleased to announce that he is a recipient of the 2018 Okawa Research Grant for his work on Reducing Implicit Societal Bias in Artificial Intelligence Systems.  This year there were  six awardees—five of them from California universities.

The Okawa Foundation’s mission is to promote and seek development in the field of information and communications technology through awards and research grants, and to further international academic and cultural exchanges in this area. Awards will be presented to grant recipients on September 13th in San Francisco.

Kai-Wei joined our Computer Science Department in 2017 following work at the University of Virginia and post-doc research at Microsoft Research New England.  His research goal is to build intelligence systems that solve real-world problems by automatically acquiring knowledge.
