Professor Quanquan Gu’s statistical machine learning lab has recently launched a project using machine learning to combat COVID-19 (https://covid19.uclaml.org). The lab has built a predictive model for COVID-19 confirmed cases as well as a death and peak date forecast at national, state, and county levels in the US. Their model UCLA-SuEIR is one of the models used by the official CDC COVID-19 Forecasting (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/covid-data/forecasting-us.html).

In detail, SuEIR model is a new variant of the famous epidemic model SEIR, and takes into account the hidden factors of untested cases as well as unreported cases. The details about the model can be found at https://covid19.uclaml.org/model.

Professor Gu’s lab uses machine learning algorithms to train the new epidemic model automatically. Their model can be updated very efficiently on a daily basis.
