Quanquan Gu, an assistant professor of computer science in the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, has received an AWS Machine Learning Research Award.

The award supports Prof. Gu’s research for developing a suite of principled and efficient deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms with provable performance guarantees. This research bridges the gap between the empirical success of DRL and traditional reinforcement learning theory and will establish the foundations of DRL, an essential process in making these algorithms more efficient and reliable in many critical application domains such as autonomous driving, AI for personalized healthcare, and government decision-making.

Prof. Gu’s previous honors include Yahoo! Academic Career Enhancement Award (2015), NSF CAREER Award (2017), Salesforce Deep Learning Research Award (2018), Adobe Data Science Research Award (2018), and Simons Berkeley Research Fellowship (2019).
