The Future Is Now: “Expanding Near-Field Communication” With Jason Alvarez- Cohen of Popl | by Fotis Georgiadis | Authority Magazine | Aug, 2020 | Medium

Jason Alvarez-Cohen is the co-founder and CEO of Popl, a new company behind a smartphone accessory and app, which allows users to share their information with other phones wirelessly while maintaining social distancing.

The technology is meant to act as a replacement for exchanging business cards or typing your contact information on someone else’s phone. Alvarez-Cohen first came across the near-field communication (NFC) technology at a party before the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The app enables users with smartphones to exchange social media and contact information by simply pressing Popl on their phone.

Popl launched its app in mid-February on TikTok and now has more than 100,000 users in nearly 40 countries.

Alvarez-Cohen’s parents are both engineers, and when it came time to go off to college, he followed in their footsteps as an undeclared engineering student at UCLA. He soon realized that computer science was the major for him, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 2018.
