We propose a joint research between Warner Bros and the UCLA Computer Science Department team on intellectual property piracy assessment and intellectual property protection techniques for multimedia, and in particular audio and video records. The proposed effort has two major components, which are well captured by our short and long term goals. Immediate action items, (short term) are pilot projects to demonstrate the potential for effective, creative, guided and focused research collaboration through tangible and relevant results. The specific technical goals are to: 1) to conduct statistical analysis of WWW and user behavior related to use of pirated audio material; 2) to develop fingerprinting techniques for multimedia applications; We have two long term goals. The first one is to create methodology and tools in which Internet content can be distributed in the fair-use environment. The second goal of the project is establish university-industry collaboration through research and other activities related to a variety of issues related to distribution of digital entertainment material using Internet.
