This project is to remedy a general situation described in two ways. First, in many cases excessively lengthy downloads are needed to use internet commerce services. Second, as described below, Java transfers can cause local computer problems. There are added resources for this activity. See Allen Klinger, or send email to klinger@cs.ucla.edu, if interested.

Yahoo! has a new service called "Yahoo! Companion". When you are ready to begin they ask you to read the terms of service and then if you click "I Accept, Activate Now" a dialog box opens. The following is then displayed:

Installing and running software without warning you is a high risk access.

Description

Installing software on your computer's main hard disk without giving you any wa rning, potentially deleting other files on the hard disk. Any software on the h ard disk may be executed in the process. This is an extremely dangerous form of access. It should be granted by system administrators only.

It consists of

Installing Java software on your computer. (medium)
Installing and running software on your computer. (high)
Installing and running software without warning you. (high)
