This site was initiated in 1996. It is associated with a course taught to UCLA seniors, most who are in the Computer Science Department of the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Items here introduce concepts and practices in design to these students. There are also items on understanding mathematics, particularly in its relationship to computing and computer science.

Most files here were inserted beginning early in 1997: many in only two months; I did most of the work (for scanning and cartoons, I was aided by Gavin Wu; Eskandar Ensafi improved my ability to use HTML; other students in the Fall '96, and Winter '97 offerings of the CS 190 Computer Science Design Project Course contributed. The Fall course students commented that I should have used the web instead of distributing hard copy in class. The Winter quarter students were avid learners, and in the case of at least two people, M. Grazia Pollarini and Keith Chiem, wonderful teachers of HTML and the ins and outs of the Multimedia Laboratory Windows 95 and other systems).

show varied uses of HTML, and different ways to incorporate visual information. Some involve only a small variation on a standard picture plus biography format. Others use text and pointers to display different files.

One of my big interests is human/computer-interaction. Another thing I'm very interested in is cooperative or computer-mediated work. I also care a great deal about using images in math/cs education, and the general role of mathematics as a gateway topic to technical fields.
