Academic Excellence

The Honors Program offers increased opportunity for interaction with faculty, participation in advanced coursework and experience in thesis preparation. In addition, funding for University summer employment is available to Departmental Honor's students through the Division of Honors Student Summer Stipend award. (The number of stipends awarded and the amount varies from year to year.) Application forms are available in the Program Office.

 

Eligibility Requirements

· Junior class standing or above (minimum of 90 completed units of university-level coursework)

· Prior completion of all premajor courses and prior acceptance in the major.

· A 3.0 minimum GPA in all university-level coursework (including premajor courses)

· A 3.5 minimum GPA in coursework required in the major (excluding premajor courses)

 

Admission Requirements

· Completed application forms submitted to the student affairs officer in the Interdepartmental Office.

· Selection of a faculty sponsor from among the members of the Interdepartmental Committee.

· For highest honors: a suitable research topic leading to completion of a senior thesis is selected, in consultation with the faculty advisor.

 

Continuation Requirements (Minimum Progress)

· Enrollment in the special honors section C&S Bio 189 of C&S Bio/BME/CS CM186B/CM286B is required.

· For students pursuing highest honors, acceptable progress toward completion of research is monitored quarterly. The student will submit a brief "statement of progress" to his faculty sponsor with a copy to the Interdepartmental Chair.

· At least 2 quarters of research are required.

· The student shall enroll in 4 units of course C&S Bio 198 in the quarter the research thesis is submitted.

 

Requirements for Graduation with Honors or Highest Honors

Honors
· Completion of all requirements for the Major
· Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better in all University-level coursework
· Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better in coursework in the Major
· Grade of B or better in C&S Bio 189 and C&S Bio/BME/CS CM186B/CM286B.

Highest Honors
· All of the above

· Senior Research Thesis (at least 2 quarters of effort)
· Awarded at the discretion of the faculty sponsor and Interdepartmental Chair, based on the degree of excellence of the senior thesis.
