UCLA WING group conducts research in wireless networking, mobile systems, and network security. Our focus is on design, implementation and experimentation of protocols, algorithms and systems for wireless data networks. The goal is to build high-performance and dependable networking solutions for the wireless Internet.

Our recent focus has been on the networking technology that enables dependable online services on smartphone devices. The technical approach we take is through adapting the current cloud service platform to mobile devices. To this end, three critical component technologies have to work in concert: data center-based server cloud operating in the back end that offers streamlined management and online services, high-speed wireless access to the cloud on the wired Internet from smartphones, and new services enabled by the mobile cloud. A list of recent ongoing projects is as follows:

·         Ultra-High-Speed Wireless Access (joint effort with SLA and others):

o   RRAA: Robust Rate Adaptation for Wi-Fi Networks

o   MIMO Scheduling for 3GPP LTE Networks

o   WCube: Case for a Scalable Wireless Interconnect for Multi-Core NoC

o   Improving 802.11n MIMO Networks

·         Data Center Networking (joint effort with MSRA):

o   DCell & FiConn: Highly Scalable Data Center Structures

o   BCube: Modular Data Center

o   RMesh: Enhancing Legacy Data Centers

·         Services on Smartphones & Mobile Phones:

o   SmartSiren: Collaborative Virus Detection and Alert for Smartphones

o   Reliability of National SMS in Operational 2G Networks

o   P&C: Intention-based Device Pairing for Mobile Phone Users
