Dear Class,

The talks will be held in 4760 Boelter Hall (Faculty Commons), next Tuesday and
Thursday from 2-6PM. Each Honors student will sign up for a 20-minute slot.

As before (see http://www.cs.ucla.edu/honors/announce.html), please schedule
your talks using google calendar. For your convenience, I am reproducing the
instructions on how to schedule your talk.

Log on to google calendars. You should now see "CS194 2007-08" calender in "my
calendars" on the left side. Note the color in which it comes. The events with
that color in the calendar to the right are the events in this calendar.

Find a free 20 min slot among the 24 time slots.

Goto create event. In "What", write your name. In description, note your project
title and professor name. In the guest list to the right, put
5gnejet3ijm58m9gvfc7k843m0@group.calendar.google.com

Click Save  (click on send when asked whether to send invitation to guests)

Verify that this event comes in the CS194 calendar (match color). If someone
else was concurrently scheduling presentation at the same time, it might happen
that the time slot selected by you was already taken. In this case, this event
will not appear in the CS194 calendar and you will get an email (declining
invitation from cs194.ucla@gmail.com). If this happens, repeat the whole process
again.

If all goes well, you have scheduled your talk. Please check to see if it
appears on the calendar on the class website http://www.cs.ucla.edu/honors/

Please schedule your talk by Friday and start preparing your presentation.
Before your talk, please upload your checkpoint 1 presentation on the class
website.

Thank you,
Vipul Goyal

Dear Honors students,

Several students asked for more time.  Since the checkpoint talk is so
important, we wanted to make sure you would all have enough time to talk
with your advisors and update your slides. So, we've re-scheduled the
checkpoint talks for next week.

The talks will be held in 4760 Boelter Hall (Faculty Commons),
next Tuesday and Thursday from 2-6PM.  Let us know if none of
these times work for you.

Each Honors student will sign up for a 20-minute slot.  The
checkpoint talk itself should be 5 minutes long, followed by
15 minutes of discussion.  (Please be prepared to wait in case
some students' discussions go on too long.)

In case two or more students are on a team, please sign up for a
40-minute slot, so that we will have enough time to discuss each student's
part of the project.

If you have any questions, send an e-mail to me and/or the TA (Vipul Goyal).

Thanks,
Amit

Dear Honors Program students,

Welcome back to UCLA and your second quarter of the Honors research project.
We hope that you were able to do some good work on your research
projects over the break.  You should all now be updating your
checkpoint presentations with the new work that you've done
over the break, and meeting with your advisors, in order to get ready
to present your checkpoint talks. We will be e-mailing you information
about how to sign up for those talks soon.

This is an important stage in your honors research -- by now, you've gotten
more of an appreciation for the kinds of challenges you'll be facing in your
research, and this checkpoint is an important chance for you to re-examine
your research goals and timeline.  Please try to think about this carefully
as your finalize your checkpoint slides and talk.

We look forward to seeing your talks and hearing about how your research
has been going so far!

Thank you,

Amit Sahai

Dear Class,

We are reaching the end of the quarter and by this time, all of you should have
submitted the progress summary & revisions to goals email  (If you have not,
then please do it ASAP. You will need to include a reason for being late and not
asking for extension in your email). You should also have revised your proposal
slides (if you were asked to).

The final Checkpoint1 slides are due on Dec 7  (please check the schedule on the
website).

Dec 7: Checkpoint1 slides due (3-4 slides), should send to advisor,
and upload

The checkpoint slides should have very specific information on what you HAVE
ALREADY COMPLETED (rather than what you are doing right now and what you plan to
do in future). Please also include a self-assessment of whether the goals which
you set for yourself for this quarter (in your proposal) were met or not. Note
that checkpoint1 slides will be given significant weightage while assigning
grades for this quarter.

Thank you,
Vipul

Dear Class,

This is a reminder that you should schedule a special meeting with your advisor
to discuss progress on the project and review the goals. By Nov 16, please send
an email to me and the professor with progress summary and revisions to goals if
any. Again, the schedule for the class: http://www.cs.ucla.edu/honors/

Also, during the proposal presentations, whoever was instructed to revise and
upload the slides again, please do within the next 1 week.

Thank you,
Vipul

Dear Class,

A general comment which the Professor had after the presentations today is
regarding attributions. In your presentations, if there was some idea suggested
to you by others (like your advisor), please attribute it to them. At the very
least, have a title slide where you also mention the name of your adviser. And
then if someone else is involved (like a graduate student), please acknowledge
their role too.

Thank you,
Vipul

Dear Class,

The proposal presentations tomorrow and day after will be held in 4750 Boelter
Hall (Conference Room). You are welcome to attend presentations of other
students (although it is not required). I hope all of you have scheduled your
presentations by now. If you are facing any problems, please let me know.

Please upload your presentation on the server before the presentation day. You
can revise the uploaded presentation anytime (by just uploading again). So it is
a good idea to try a test upload now to make sure your account is working
(rather than running into problems in the last minute).

Thank you,

We will have the talks on Wednesday from 3PM to 5PM and on Thursday from 2PM to
6PM.

Each of you will need to pick a 15 minute slot from the slots available (i.e., 8
slots are available on Wednesday and 16 slots on Thursday). You will schedule
your presentation yourself using Google Calendar. If you don't have a google
calendar account, you can create one for free. Following are the instructions
for scheduling your talk:

On the left side, you will see an "Add" button (just above My Calendars). Select
"add friend's calendar", put

E-mail and click add.

You should now see "CS194 2007-08" calender in "my calendars" on the left side.
Note the color in which it comes. The events with that color in the calendar to
the right are the events in this calendar.

Find a free 15 min slot among the 24 time slots that I mentioned above.

Goto create event. In "What", write your name. In description, note your project
title and professor name (see the sample by Vipul Goyal from 2PM-2:15PM). In the

You can double check to see if
it appears on the calendar on the class website http://www.cs.ucla.edu/honors/
When you are done scheduling, please drop me an email confirming your time.

Please schedule your talk by Friday and start preparing your presentation.

Dear Honors Research students,

Several students finalized their projects quite late, and a few need some
extra time.  To give you all enough time to learn enough background information
and plan out your project, we are moving the project proposal talks to
next week (Oct 22-26).  Please use this time wisely to prepare your plan
of attack and do some initial investigating.  We will send out another email
with instructions on how to sign up for your talk.  (Refer to the overview
slides on the website for more information about the proposal talk.)

Remember to be persistent with your advisors; they are busy people but
they're committed to working with you, too.  If you don't get a response
to an e-mail, just politely try again.  Keep in mind that it is your
responsibility to make your plan and keep making progress.

Best wishes,
Amit

Dear Class,

This is a reminder that the following things are due this Friday (Oct 12):

a) An email commitment from your advisor (that he/she is willing to advise you for the duration of the program).

b) A brief description of the project. This can be 1-2 paragraphs in size. Also specify the duration of the project (2 quarters/3quarters).

If you need more time, then please email me (vipul@cs.ucla.edu) and the professor (sahai@cs.ucla.edu) with a brief justification.

The presentation given by the professor in the class is now available online on the honors program website: http://www.cs.ucla.edu/honors/  More information will be posted in near future.

Dear Honors Program students,

The first meeting for the honors program will be this FRIDAY,
September 28, at 6PM in 4760 Boelter Hall (the faculty commons,
where the infosession was in the Spring).  It will be a short
meeting to remind you all about how the program works.

As many of you know, you can start right away scheduling appointments
with professors to explore different research project possibilities.
Be sure to talk to a few different professors about multiple possibilities,
before settling on one. You can see a list of possible projects at:
http://honors-program.wikispaces.com/

PLEASE NOTE: This class does NOT meet regularly at the scheduled
times given by the registrar.  Instead, it meets according to a
special schedule that we will announce.  So please do not go to
5252 BH every MW2-4, as there will not be anyone there.

Thank you,

Amit Sahai
