CS 201: Computer Science and the Future of Storytelling, JEFF BURKE, UCLA – Center For Research in Engineering, Media & Performance

Speaker: Jeff Burke
Affiliation: UCLA - Center For Research in Engineering, Media & Performance

ABSTRACT: Storytelling and live performance are ancient and essential human activities that evolve significantly as new technologies become available, most notably in the past half-century with the emergence of inexpensive digital technology and the global Internet.  Much recent attention has focused on consumer virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR), but advances in machine learning, networking, and sensing also hold substantial promise.  In this talk, we review a few representative intersections between storytelling, live performance, and emerging technologies that are being pursued in research at UCLA and elsewhere.  We discuss specific opportunities for computer science to generate fundamental advances in how we tell and experience stories, where such innovations might intersect with consumer markets, and how these pursuits can contribute to the field of computer science itself. BIO: Jeff Burke is Assistant Dean for Technology and Innovation at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, where he has been a faculty member since 2001.  His research explores the intersections of the built environment, computer networks, and storytelling. Burke co-founded REMAP, a joint center of TFT and HSSEAS at UCLA, which uses a mixture of research, artistic production, and community engagement to investigate the interrelationships among culture, community, and technology. Since 2010, he has been the application team lead for the Named Data Networking research project, a multi-campus effort to develop a future internet architecture.  In 2014, he received a three-year Google Focused Award on the Future of Storytelling, which focuses on the intersection of storytelling and coding.
