What:
- Discuss latest influential research papers;
- Overview/summarize research topics;
- Discuss your own research;
- Learn research work from graduate students from nearby campuses;
- Rehearsal for your oral/defense/conference presentations
- ...
How:
Everybody in the study group is suggested to give a presentation in turn.
Volunteers are needed for each meeting to chair the presentation
(introduce the speaker, time the presentation, and lead possible
discussions).
Before each quarter, a draft schedule will be given and each member will
draft a presentation topic. The presentation topic is very flexible, and
you can:
- discuss recent significant paper(s)
- summarize/overview a group of papers on a specific topic
- tutorial on new concepts/ideas
- invite your friends from other campuses to give a talk
Topics can also be chosen based on our members' research interest, and our
DB faculty members can certainly help us a lot on this.
Each presentation is about one hour + discussion and Q&A.
Feedback on presentations:
This is not just a technique presentation, but also the best chance to
practice your presentation skills. After each presentation, all audience
can comment on the presentation of the speaker, and give
helpful suggestions on improvement. You will never get such a useful
feedback in a real conference!
Organizers:
In each quarter, one group will volunteer to schedule all talks.
Others:
At the week with an idmUCLA seminar, the study will be replaced by the
seminar.
Food: There will be no PIZZA in study group meetings, unless there are
invited talks.
