The First Ten Years on the Web: A Personal Perspective

UDI MANBER

Chief Scientist

Amazon.com

NCSA Mosaic was released to the world in February 1993. It is hard to
believe how far the web has gone in 10 years, so much so that most people
forget that it has been only 10 years. This is just the beginning.
As someone who started building tools for the web in May 1993, and continued
doing it for the last 10 years, both in academia and in the dot com world, I
will offer some perspective on what makes the web different, where it has
been, and where it is going. I will concentrate on three areas close to my
heart - Search, Security, and E-Commerce.

Udi Manber is now a VP and Chief Algorithms Officer at Amazon.com (there is actually a BusinessWeek Online Story about it). Udi Manber was a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Arizona. He received his Ph.D in Computer Science from the University of Washington in 1982. His research interests include WWW applications, especially search and resource discovery tools, software tools, computer networks, computer security, and design of algorithms. He is the author of over 50 technical articles, a best-selling book Introduction to Algorithms -- A Creative Approach, Addison Wesley, 1989 (16th printing, 1999), and the editor of 3 other books. He received three best-paper awards, a teaching award, a Presidential Young Investigator Award in 1985, and the USENIX Software Tools User Group Award in 1999.
