- Can I get an office?
Talk to your advisor, they handle offices. The department official policy
is that if you are either a fellowship recipient, or an RA or an TA, you are
qualified for an office space. In case you cannot get any but still need a
small space to store your belongs, you can contact Judy William at 4732J to
get a locker. It's free and you need to prepare a combination lock yourself,
pick one of lockers and tell Judy its number.

- Can I get a parking permit?
If you are working for the department,
there are a limited number of
parking permits in Structure 8 available each quarter.
In structure 8 you have to "stack park". This means you
park behind other cars and give them your keys. They move your car (hopefully
not taking your loose change) when they need to, and give your keys back to
you when you return.
Note that you can also
apply to parking services for a permit,
but to succeed you need to do this well in advance of each quarter.

You need to talk to Charlie Fritzius at 3413 BH.

- Which computers can I access? Where are they located?
The GSWR (Grad Student Workstation Room) is full of workstations
that are always available to use. You can almost always get a computer here,
except near the very end of the quarter when projects are due. They are on
the 3rd floor of Boelter hall. You can access the lab from two different doors,
both labelled 3286 BH.

- What is the easiest way to login from home?
There are several ways to do this.
The best way is to get a
Bruin Online Account.
This will give you PPP/SLIP access. From there you can telnet into whatever
CS machines you would like.
If you are using a e-mail program like Eudora, and login through BOL, you
cannot send e-mail from your CS mail server. This is a security precaution
for spam. The workaround is to send the e-mail from the BOL servers, and to
retrieve it from your CS mail server. (ie configure your POP settings to
get mail from your CS mail server, and to send e-mail from the Bruin Online
Server. [ben2])

- Is there any mailbox available in the department for personal use?
Graduate students have shared mailboxes in the Graduate Affairs Office, 4403BH. They are
located on the left hand side just as you enter the office.
Mail is filed alphabetically.
You should check there once in awhile if you are paid by the department since your
payslip usually ends up there.

- If I have questions about academics, do I have to talk to my
advisor? Is there anyone else to talk to?
You never have to do anything. Your fellow graduate students
are a good resource. Often they can share their own experiences or those
of other grad students. Prof's in classes you are taking can be a resource
too, depending on the prof you have.

- Where can I get information on fee deferrals?
This is handled by Roberta Nelson in 4732 BH.
Deferring your fees just extends the deadline for paying you registration fees.
This is useful for RAs and TAs since fee remissions usually lag a little behind deadlines set by
Murphy Hall. Normally you will get an initial bill for each quarter that says you have
to pay the entire registration fee. You defer paying this with a fee deferral until your fee remission has been processed.
Then you get a second bill that notes the remission (via a Fee Payment Authorization) and you just pay whatever is
left (usually a few hundred dollars).
