The most common forms of support are:
In general, if you want to graduate sooner and your advisor has the grant
to support you, it is better for you to work for your advisor. The advantages
are obvious because it will speed up your graduation process. In addition, the
work you do usually contributes directly to your dissertation, generates
publications, gains hands-on experiences, and prepares for the post-graduation
bootstrap. The downside of working for your advisor is that you probably will
be bounded to him/her especially when your advisor is very demanding.

Also, occasionally people post job notices on the wall in Boelter Hall,
send them out to the dist-grads mailing list,
or just tell Verra they are looking for someone.
Keep your eyes open.
(This is under the assumption that *someone* has agreed to pay
for your trip.)
If you do not have the means to pay for your food and lodging without an
advance, we can get you traveler's checks for the approximate amount
of these items. If you need an advance, you can see Gertrude Lewis

There are a couple of ways to handle paying travel expenses depending on
time. Registration fees can be paid directly to the conference if there is
enough time. It takes at least 2 weeks to have a check issued through our
Accounting department. All other expenses you would have to pay and the
University would reimburse you based on your original receipts. If you buy
your airline ticket in advance, we can get you reimbursed for it ahead of
time but it means processing a form and you would need to walk the
form and your original ticket to the Travel Office on Wilshire Blvd. They
would then send you a check.
