Major Field Requirements

The Major consists of a methodology core (6 courses: 23 units), a concentration area (min. 7 courses: 28 units), and a 4 unit Research and Research Communication course. The concentration and Research and Research Communication courses are selected in consultation with a faculty advisor and the program chair.

METHODOLOGY CORE

Required: Four subject areas as follows:

  1. One overview course: Computer Science M186A (same as C&S Bio M186A and Biomedical Engineering M186A)
     
  2. One course in probability: Statistics 100A or Electrical Engineering 131A or Math 170A
    and
    one course in statistics: Statistics 100B

  3. One course in systems & signals: Electrical Engineering 102;
    and
    one course in feedback and control: Electrical Engineering 141 or Mechanical Aerospace Engineering 171A

  4. One course in biomodeling and computer simulation: C&S Bio CM186B (same as Computer Science CM186B/CM286B, Medicine M186B and Biomedical Engineering CM186B/CM286B

CONCENTRATION AREA ( 5 choices)

Designated Concentrations

  1. Systems Biology (28 units): MCDB 144, 100 and Phy Sci 166 or EEB 170, or BME CM 102 and 103, in addition to 12 or more units selected from the Systems Biology Approved Course List

  2. Bioinformatics (38 or 32 units): (PIC 10B, PIC 10C, PIC 60) OR (CS 32, 180) and 6 courses chosen from the Bioinformatics Approved Course List

  3. Neurosystems (28 units): NS M101A, 101B and 102 and 14 or more additional units selected from the Neurosystems Approved Course List

  4. Biomedical Systems (28 units): 7 courses chosen from the Biomedical Systems Approved List

  5. Computers & Biosystems (43 or 37 units): (PIC 10B, PIC 10C, PIC 30, PIC 60) OR (CS 32, 33, 180) and 6 courses chosen from the Computers & Biosystems Approved List

 

RESEARCH AND RESEARCH COMMUNICATION

(4 units). The program Research and Research Communication can be satisfied only by Capstone II course: C&SB 186C, which should be taken in the junior and senior years following the

completion of Capstone I, C&SB 186B.
